What is the Value of a Therapeutic Group?
When faced with difficulty, there may feelings of aloneness. Perhaps the belief that you are the only one who is currently in this situation.
Group therapy allows clients to discover that they are not alone in their thoughts and feelings. As people in the group share their experiences and emotions, others in the group recognize similar things in themselves.
In other words, group members have things in common. While the group members share commonalities, they also have differing viewpoints that are discussed in a safe setting. The members can learn and grow from each other in a context that is protected by a professional therapist.
Common Questions about Group Therapy:
Q: Do I need to talk when I come to group or can I just listen?
A: When first considering the group experience, it may be frightening. There may be fear that others will judge or condemn, or that you will embarrass yourself. The therapist is there to protect you and encourage you. You may choose to be quiet the first session or two. Later, you will understand that your views contribute to the growth and health of the group. Frequently, group members become your greatest supporters.
Q: Can I just join a group that meets my schedule?
A: Usually, no. Group members normally meet with a therapist on an individual basis first. This process ensures that the client is in a group that will best suit their emotional need. Certain groups are formed to address specific difficulties and would not be helpful for all clients. Groups are scheduled during the lunch hour and early evening hours to accommodate work schedules.
Q: Does my insurance company cover the cost of group sessions?
A: You will need to inquire with your insurance company to determine if group therapy is a covered service. We try to keep our group costs low so that you can make the most of your group experience. Clients may opt to self-pay even with coverage. NMCCC attempts to make group rates affordable for even the self-pay client.
Q: What about confidentiality in the group setting?
A: Confidentiality cannot be guaranteed in the group context. It must be noted that the therapist will remind the clients this is the case when they enter group therapy. Each member of the group is also concerned about their right to privacy so there is understanding of the need to keep group discussion and membership in the group.
Q: How long does group last?
A: Adult groups normally last for 90 minutes, while groups for young people will not last more than one hour. Some groups meet for a designated number of sessions. Others are on-going and therapy for the client ends when the therapist feels the client is ready to leave the group. |
